Her secret locket

IMG_3443

Blair found a locket while rummaging through things yesterday. She immediately wanted to put a picture in it. What should hold such a beloved position, she pondered? Her first thought was Tessie, the family dog that Blair has claimed as her very own personal pet. But in the end, she decided that only two objects of affection were truly deserving of such affection: her twin bunnies. So now when she doesn’t have one of her comforts within an arm’s reach, she can just open it up and gaze upon them. Too funny. But adorably sweet.

The Big One.

This is what you can expect on your first birthday when you’re kid #4: (sorry you got the shaft, chica. However, in my defense, it was a super crazy busy mad week. I’ll make it up to her next year.)

Breakfast didn’t get a picture. I’m sure it was just cereal and fruit. Without a candle, but with a song of course.

Lunch was ham and cheese. (Yes, still in pjs at lunch. Hey, when it’s your birthday, you get to be as lazy as you want!) She had only been on a mostly-table-food diet for 5 days, so for her, ham and cheese was super exciting!

She climbed on things she couldn’t get down from.

Climbed in things she couldn’t get out of.

Dinner didn’t get a picture either, but by this time, Grandma, Grandpa, Aunt Melissa and Isabella finally made it to town, so she got to eat chicken strips and a warm roll with them.

Then we went back home for ice cream. Finally, she got a candle! And another song! However, it was over an hour past her bedtime and she was WAY crabby, so it was a quick birthday celebration.

She clearly was NOT interested in being withheld from the flaming candle we placed 3 inches in front of her.

Once the fire hazard was removed, she was all over it. “Hey, I could get used to this meal!”

If ice cream is this good, the colorful candle must be even better!

Then it was a quick clean up and off to bed. Exciting day, eh? Happy Birthday Big Girl!

Firecracker, firecracker…

The Fourth of July was a fun and action-packed day for us this year. Denise and Todd and the kids were in town so we went down to the farm in the morning to see them and pick up some things they brought up for us. Our original plans had us cooking out and swimming with friends later that afternoon, but unexpected rain thwarted those plans, so we ended up staying at the farm and letting the kids play with their cousins. Being in the country is always fun—it’s so nice to breathe in the country air, feel the sun, and let the kids be kids with good old fashioned playing outside. They got to catch tiny frogs, and even a big bullfrog, ride 4wheelers, swim, run, play with turtles, pee in the grass, swim some more, run some more, catch more frogs, light sparklers and finally pop a squat right there on the front lawn and watch the town fireworks launching just a few fields away. It was non-stop action from the time we got there till the time we left. We are always grateful to Denise, Todd, and Todd’s family for letting us tag along and hang out.

The day, in many photos (because you know I can't be brief):

Lots of tiny frogs!

If you rub their belly, they fall asleep. Who knew?

Look out Kobayashi, there's a new hot dog eater in town!

Apparently, turtles like strawberries AND pringles!

"Hello, my name's Trouble. Have we met?"

Sloane.

I don't know what this girl is thinking most days.
She's a handful...to say the least! She’s always into something it seems. One afternoon, she was on the back porch and I walked by the door and caught a glimpse of her straddling what I soon figured out was a stream of pee running down the concrete. IMG_2547 I secretly watched (and giggled) while she stood in this pose, with hands on hips, staring at the pee for a while before finally deciding to take her underwear off and hobble around the back porch completely naked, still with hands on hips, still in a legs-straddled position. She'd stop and scratch her head and stare into the back yard for a bit, then continue hobbling. And then stop again and look around and scratch her butt, all in the same pose mind you.
 IMG_2548
She then went over to the line of pee, drew a circle about an inch ahead of it with a piece of chalk, and sat in wait while the pee gradually made it to the circle.
IMG_2553 Satisfied with her mission, she walked over to the back door, which is when she spotted me, to tell me that she peed. When I asked her why, she replied that she wanted to pee outside "like a puppy." I reminded her that we don't pee outside; we pee on the potty. She then explained to me, "Mamas pee on the potty." And then very matter of factly added, "But I don't." …Well, I'm glad we cleared that up.
Later in the evening, as I was getting everyone to bed--or rather, unsuccessfully getting everyone to bed since they all kept getting back out--I went into the front room to turn the light off again for the 3rd time when I saw the curtains move. Who popped out? It's Sloane, completely naked except for one blue sock. Standing in the front window. Naked!
Another day, she peed through her clothes while at Reid’s baseball game. In her defense, she HAD been telling me that she needed to go to the bathroom, but she kept playing with other kids, and so for that reason, and for multiple other reasons, I didn’t take her to the restroom. Well, she finally just decided to pee in the grass. So I changed her into some slightly-snug pants, which was all I had in the car and which she didn’t care for, but she kept them on. Not for long though. I turned around a little later to find her with just her shirt on, no panties or shorts. Standing on the roof of the minivan.
Hmm, what else? Well, she has pooped in the trash can.* Also in the grass in the back yard. She flushed a small cup down the toilet which necessitated a call to the plumber which is when Blair forgot that she (Blair) had put a pancake in the microwave to warm it up and left it running for about 15 minutes which no one noticed until I saw smoke in the kitchen and opened the microwave to find a black smoking pancake nearly about to catch fire (which I was recently told has become our plumber's favorite story to share). She also put a hand towel, 2 dress up princess shoes, a small ball, and a pair of panties in the toilet. All at one time. The panties were never recovered. And then today it was a pair of pajama shorts that we found in the toilet. Luckily, Reid pulled them out as soon as he saw Sloane flushing.
*Her response to this offense was a shrug of the shoulders and “I guess I just felt like pooping in the trash can.”

Movin’ on up

We took the 2 twin beds out of the girls' room and replaced them with one queen bed. It looks like the first night was a snoring success. (Ha!) Actually, the real success was that Sloane stayed in her bed and went right to sleep, without getting out a thousand times. I’m not holding my breath that that trend will continue, but I can hope.

Jeremy was walking down the hall when he heard, “Daddy, can you get me down?”

Spring Break 2011

I had another free photo book, so I filled it with pictures from our Spring Break trip to Corpus. Enjoy!
